Popular elephant in Chiba moves to Okinawa Zoo for breeding program

A popular Asian elephant named Yumeka at the Ichihara Elephant Kingdom in Chiba Prefecture came to the Okinawa Zoo & Museum in Okinawa City to take part in a breeding program on November 12. The ten-year old female elephant will stay at the zoo until she falls pregnant.
Her mate is a fourteen-year old male elephant named Ryuto. He was chosen as the mate since he is known as the father of a two-year old female elephant Rubi, who was the very first case of elephant breeding in Okinawa.
Yumeka was put together with Rubi’s mother, seventeen-year old elephant Ruka after she arrived at the zoo on November 12. The director of the Ichihara Elephant Kingdom, Sayuri Sakamoto, expected good news, saying “Yumeka is loved because of her calm character. I think they can raise a baby elephant in a nice environment.”
